(Debbie and Zeus photo by Gary Trotter)The Safe Pets Project aims to get councils around the UK to join in with us in developing tests and education for dogs and owners.  Lots of councils have imposed control orders banning dogs from various areas and there are moves in the background to do more.  Sadly every week brings a new tragic story of a dog injuring or killing an adult or child and for every one of those stories are dozens more of frustrated people victimised and terrorised by dogs.

The dogs are not to blame, they don't choose to stray, bite or bark at you, their owners choose that.  The good dogs and owners suffer because of the selfishness of a handful.    This project aims to work towards a solution and to get owners and councils working together for once. We would like to thank the many councils who have already responded so positively and for the joining of our new sponsors and supporters.

The process of meeting the councils starts very soon, a national launch is planned for early 2008.
We would like to welcome on board Anna Webb and Paws PR and thank her for her support and wonderful PR help, campaigns start very soon.

We are proud to have the support of MSP Alex Neil, currently proposing a  Control of Dogs (Scotland) Bill.  Debbie Connolly met with Alex Neil and secured his support for the SafePets Project.  Click here to read his statement.

We have several new sponsors coming on line very soon with fantastic support!

A huge thanks to actor Jaye Griffiths (Instinct, Doctors, The Bill) for her support of the project  She has a rescue Greyhound and is a true dog lover.

You may not be aware that Dublin City recently introduced a ban on owning several well known breeds of dog for their tenants.

"Dublin city council has banned a number of breeds from being kept in Dublin city council properties these
breeds are the Rottweiler, Dobermann, G.S.D, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Bullmastiff, American Pit Bull Terrier,
Akita and Japanese Tosa. The following link gives information http://www.dublincity.ie/press_news/press_releases/council_bans_certain_breeds_of_dogs_
within_their_housing_estates_and_ flat_complexes.asp"

Even if you don't own a breed you think is affected now, it could spread to all dogs.  Bad owners need help and education and good ones need protection.

Mission Statement

SafePets UK believes that owners, not dogs cause the problems and that decent owners and their dogs should not pay for the sins of bad owners.  We have developed this project to enable owners and dogs to prove their ability to live safely in the community.  We hope to involve every council in the UK eventually and to provide a sensible alternative to simply punishing breeds.  The Dangerous Dogs Act has clearly demonstrated the problems of identifying breeds and types and simply hasn't worked in that area.

There is no logic in trying to ban breeds, it has no effect on bad owners.  They will continue to be bad owners and just have different dogs.  Too many dogs cannot be identified and traced back to those owners, therefore microchipping is a must.  Dogs do not make the decision to become difficult or aggressive or to stray, owners cause all of those things.

The project is intended to test, educate and inform the public and councils and to protect the good owners and dogs.  Training to enable dogs to pass the test will be an integral part of the project.  We will be encouraging vets to offer discounts or other incentives to dogs holding the certificates.

Contact your own local councillor if you think your council would be interested in this idea, how fantastic it would be to have every UK council signed up!

Next time it could be YOUR dog affected whether you are a council tenant or not, protect your dog!
