About Us Canine Assisted Learning was created by SafePets UK, founded by Debbie Connolly of TV's "Dog Borstal" and "Britain's Most Embarrassing Pets". A behaviourist with almost 30 years experience, she has treated many species including cats, dogs and pet livestock. A regular feature writer with many media appearances, she believes there is a special bond between animals and people. Her work history also includes working with various groups including schoolchildren and disadvantaged youths and served as a Disability Services Adviser for several years as a Civil Servant. This gave her experience of working not just with people with physical disabilities, but also emotional and abuse problems too. The team includes Naidre Werner and Sue Hessom, who bring experience of Teens in care, NVQ compliance and varied project Management skills. The course involves young people training rescue dogs and working with some other animals. The animals need help to improve behaviour so they can find loving, permanent homes and the participants learn trust, love, bonding and many transferable and life skills. There is Job Search advice available, demonstrations of working dogs and understanding of control rather than aggression. Personal one to one is available and nervous teens can join in when ready. Responsibility for an individual dog, including the unpleasant jobs like kennel cleaning is a part of the learning curve too. The course offers individual rooms in a riverside cabin and is fully catered. Debbie feels that animals are a brilliant way to learn something about yourself and to learn a better range of communication skills. Many people lacking in self confidence have been helped by pets. Animals have no hidden agenda and offer themselves unconditionally. Learning to trust again is better learned initially through animals than people.

Animals give
unconditional love and can be a way to offer something yourself but also
to develop and learn emotionally too. This course offers a two way skill development using people and rescue animals. We welcome enquiries from Councils, Probation Officers and care organisations. First course fully booked, vacancies from May onwards.
Course is residential, lasts 1 week and involves working with rescue dogs and some other animals as well as personal coaching. Carers stay free. |
